Can You Spot What’s Wrong With These Urban Scenes?

It’s a good thing that Robert Rickhoff isn’t involved in any actual urban planning. Put in charge of a construction crew, he’d probably build a volleyball court in the middle of a highway or erect ramps so cars can catch some air.

Just such questionable public amenities are presented in Rickhoff’s graduate thesis at ArtEZ in the Netherlands, appropriately titled “Out of Place.” The surreal series of manipulated photos introduce a metropolis in which the architecture is twisted to spawn new, strange functions.

Come on, someone needs to make these.

Did you catch the space jump yesterday? If not, a very brave Felix Baumgartner broke the record for the highest sky dive ever at 127,000 feet above Earth. (See the video of the drop.)

See a rundown in the vid below of the camera system they set up to capture it all mid-air. Cameras were set up in the jump-off capsule, on Felix’s suit itself, and a helicopter.

the cameras for the fall were incredible, here’s some of the first bit of footage i’ve seen.

long-shot cameras (the ones on the bottom) were used by NASA to track spacecraft, a balloon was a piece of cake.

The life cycle of a leaf

Fun science fact: The word “apoptosis”, the process of programmed cell death that controls when a cell self destructs (or doesn’t) comes from the Greek for falling (-ptosis) and off (apo-) … inspired by the leaves of trees.
